The car of the future is open source
The car of the future may be open-source, human- and environment-friendly and not for sale. How? Firstly, designs will be available online for local manufacturers to build and customise; secondly, it will be introduced city by city until it creates a national network; and finally, the cars will be leased - not sold, transforming the transport business model. At the launch of the Riversimple Urban Car yesterday, we realised that it was more than just a clever invention - it may be an early signal of a possible Next Revolution: the de-centralisation of production.
End of geography revisited
Geography may not be ending after all - Richard O'Brien and Alasdair Keith take a fresh look at the original premise of Richard's best-selling book ‘The End of Geography' (1992), in this month's Cambridge Journal of Regions, Economy and Society. Looking at recent events in global finance through the lenses of deregulation and the development of ICTs, it seems as though the march to the "end" has slowed.
